Frost-laden pine branches arch across the top of the frame like a canopy that is barely holding on, and through them a low pink sun warms the sky over a frozen, misty plain. Nothing has thawed yet — the ground is still white, the air still cold enough to silver every needle — but the light coming off that sun feels different from a midwinter morning. Winter Spring finds the hour when the cold is the same as yesterday but something in the quality of the light tells you the season is about to move.
