Old Memories

by Igor Zenin

Four women in bright floral dresses sit beneath a towering bronze Lenin, faces turned toward each other instead of the monument behind them — a whole era compressed into one frame of headscarves, patterned cotton, and a statue that means something different now than it used to. It's a portrait of what actually outlasted the ideology: the people, the color, the ordinary afternoon. History gets the pedestal. Everyday life gets the bench underneath it — and somehow the bench is what photographs warmer.
