A jet aircraft cuts across a sky suffused with the warm gold and rose of sunrise — or perhaps sunset, the light refusing to commit. The contrail behind it is already softening into mist, and below, far beneath the wing, the earth is invisible. What the image holds is just the machine and the light and the impossibility of being this far above everything — the moment before the horizon takes you, the altitude at which even the largest vehicle shrinks to a line.
