Winter Trees

The same kind of bare, twisting tree stands here under a very different sky — streaked pink and red at sunset, its branches stark black against fresh snow on the ground. Where a thawing landscape sits low and dark near open water, this one reaches upward into color and light. Winter Trees is proof that one gnarled shape can carry two completely different moods depending on what's behind it.
