The Last Car

A figure leans from the rear window of the last car on an Ontario Northland train — the aged car bearing the legend "Ontario's Development Road," its weathered steel marked by decades of prairie crossings. Ahead, the locomotive's smoke billows into a stormy sky. Below, the wind bends the grass flat. The Last Car is a portrait of a position: the only window that faces backward while everything else is pointed forward, watching the whole train pull away from where it has been.
