First Frost
by Igor Zenin
The surface of a still lake in early winter, caught at the moment when the first ice has formed — a skin of transparency over black water. The forest beyond stands bare and white with new frost. A few birds move in the middle distance. The image is almost monochrome: the palette of this particular morning is pewter and pale blue and the faintest brown of bark. First Frost is a record of threshold — the day between autumn and winter, when the world commits.
